The Great Storm of 16 October 1987 forever changed the landscape of Southeast England. Over 15 million trees were destroyed and these scenes in Lewes and Brighton were typical. I was living in Lewes at the time and it was quite a scary event. The storm was strongest in the middle of the night and all the power went off so we couldn't see anything. All we could hear was the roar of the wind and the sound of roof tiles being ripped off and smashing in the road. Thankfully our house suffered very little damage but others were not so lucky. These images have been chosen for their news or historical interest rather than the quality of the photography and they were all scanned from slides or film negatives
