The 'Athina-B' was on its way from The Azores, loaded with 3,000 tonnes of pumice, when it got into difficulties in a storm. It was too rough to get into Shoreham Harbour, its engines lost power, then it drifted east and eventually ran aground on Brighton Beach, just east of the Palace Pier, on 21st January 1980. These older images have been chosen for their news or historical interest rather than the quality of the photography and they were all scanned from slides or film negatives
